The Castro Communist revolution has created the myth that Baliño transmitted to Julio Antonio Mella a message from Martí that more or less said: “The important thing is not just to be independent, once we are, we will establish a Marxist revolution in Cuba, which is precisely our objective,” There is no evidence that such words from Martí were ever transmitted to Baliño, who was never a close or trusted friend of the Apostol. Baliño did meet Mella and was close to him. During the lifetime of both, Baliño and Mella, nothing like the message from Martí was ever reported by either. It has all be a concoction of Castro to establish a very unlikely connection with José Martí.
