Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (1814-1873)

Poet, born in Camagüey, she achieved recognition as one of the greatest poets of the Spanish language.  She used the pseudonym “La Peregrina” in most of her writings.  She excelled in lyric poetry, but also authored plays (LeonciaAlfonso Munio, etc), and novels (SabEspatolino, etc.).  She lived in Spain 1836-1859 and from 1864.  Her main poetic compositions were Llanto de la cruzSoledad del almaPoesías, and La Vuelta a mi patria.

  1. Hay una importante mencion que falta: Fue la primera mujer que tuvo el honor de ser aceptada por La Real Academia de la Lengua Española. Hubo uno de sus miembros que comento: “Es mucho hombre esa mujer”.
