Aurelio Álvarez de la Vega

Aurelio Álvarez de la Vega was born in Camagüey in 1881. As a teenager he joined the Cuban Liberation Army. At the end of the war he was a member of the Board of Education. He got his start in politics as a member of the Conservative Party, of which he became vice president. He was a House Representative, Senator of the Republic of Cuba and President of the Senate (1921-1925).

He fought the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado. He was director of the newspaper El Día and was a member of the Carlos Mendieta Nationalist Union. He later joined the Cuban Revolutionary Party (A), for which he was elected delegate to the Constituent Assembly of 1940. For the Authentic Party he was also elected Senator in the elections of 1940 and 1944.

For many years he presided over the Association of Sugar Cane Growers of Cuba (Asociación de Colonos de Cuba). Despite his affiliation with the Partido Auténtico, he criticized the government of Dr. Ramón Grau San Martín and the policy of the Partido Revolucionario Cubano (A) in power. In 1947 he seconded Eduardo Chibás in the formation of the Cuban People’s Party (Orthodox).

He passed away in 1949.
